Border Patrol agents working in Douglas caught a
convicted sex offender from El Salvador sneaking into the United States on
Monday, according to the agency.
Carlos Alberto Gonzalez was arrested about 1:30 p.m. about 10 miles
east of Douglas. The 30-year-old was convicted and sentenced to two years
in 1999 for lewd and lascivious acts with a child in California. He was
returned to El Salvador in 2000, according to a news release.
Gonzalez is in federal custody and has been charged with re-entry of an
aggravated felon. By comparing fingerprints of apprehended illegal
immigrants with an FBI database, Border Patrol apprehended 7,128 convicted
criminals from Oct. 1 through June 30, according to the agency. Of those
arrests, 105 were on sex-related charges.
